A CPS research lab at Iowa State
This is the Coordinated Systems Lab
, where we study and engineer cyber-physical systems, or CPS. Thank you for visiting our page.
We are interested in understanding problems that arise at the intersection of
A secondary (but related) interest lies in modern feedback control, dynamics, and modeling. Please see our research page below.
CSL is run by Cody Fleming. Starting in August 2020, Cody is with the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State University.
Prior to Iowa State, Cody had joint appointments in Systems Engineering and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Virginia. He was a founding member of the interdisciplinary Link Lab for Cyber-physical Systems at UVA.
Multi-agent Intent Prediction
Safe navigation of autonomous agents in human centric environments (or in a multi-agent context in general) requires the ability to understand and predict motion of neighboring agents. However, predicting pedestrian or other agent intent is a complex problem. Motion is governed by complex social navigation norms, is dependent on neighbors’ trajectories, and is multimodal in nature.

, a Spatial Context Attentive NetworkModel- and data-driven Control
This project combines data- and model-driven predictive controllers to solve problems that deal with unknown functions operating interdependently with functions that are explicitly modeled with mathematical functions. In other words, we are combining black-box machine learning techniques with analytical approaches based on 1st-principle physical models.
Safety of Human-Autonomy Teams
This project seeks to answer two questions. First, where does the machine fit into the team in safety-critical operations? Second, how do we assure safety in human-machine teams with increasingly-autonomous capabilities? To answer these questions, the project involves:

Individual success depends on the success of our group. We strive for an environment where (1) every team member is passionate about the research they are pursuing, and (2) we bring together people who contribute and fit into a situation that is collaborative, collegial, and values people over projects and productivity. Interested students or researchers should possess the following characteristics:
If you possess these traits and a desire to make a difference, please contact Cody Fleming.
